As it came back through town it hit a car that went around the gates at the Wabash Ave. crossing. All four people inside the car were killed (high on crystal meth). Thanks! It's shortened a little bit during certain times of the year, but it usually runs with 40+ cars during peak travel times.

Great video!! I read in an issue of Model Railroader, not sure what issue though, that the Auto Train (at that time) was 2 Genisis Engines + 17 Superliner cars + 23 auto carriers (mix of the 86' bi-level boxcar looking types, and the auto racks in Amtrak paint)totaling 40 cars. It looks like they have shortened it some since then but it still is one HUGE passenger train !!!

Gunston Cove Road, which is just south of the Lorton station. It runs along the tracks for a about half a mile before crossing over them on this little wooden bridge.

Wonder what would happen if the train was extended from Lorton Virginia to Denver and onwards to Los Angeles. If that idea doesn't work then use the Crescent's route and the Sunset Limited route to L.A. Plus the Sunset's route doesn't have very though grades.

Keep in mind that the western LD trains have to face some tough terrain. Auto Train runs on relatively flat coastal plains for the majority of its journey, so the extra power isn't necessary.

We took our first family vacation back in 03. One of the best. A family of 5 round trip..... get this......$650.00 round trip. I caught it online with theres rail sale. it was to regain the loss of ridership from 911. Back then, none of the auto carriers had the phase 5 logo, only the locos had them. 52 cars in all. I guees they were dealheading some for the next trip. In spite of all te cars the rain was 3/4 empty. On both trips we were 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Great Video. Love it!!!!!!

It's a little longer during the summer. A fully loaded train train can hold more than 400 people, and more than 200 automobiles.
