Good point about the preserving of the rain forest. The cutting down of the trees doesn't do any good for the air people breathe in. It's one of the things I have often overlooked when reading about climate change. The destruction of the trees can have just as much of an effect as pollution from coal and gasoline.

For abortion,are we speaking in environmental terms? From this perspective it is not perticularly significant; birth control in general and healthcare/education which allow for a lowe fertility rate are far more important. In general GDP is a measure of material throughput and it depends on population and per capita gdp. Per capita gdp is growing faster than population so the economy is more of a threat:

Taxes can play a vluable role for society but without clear reason and careful design they only build resentment. I would like to see income tax cut and that same level of tax placed on carbon intensive activities; this is the more libertarian position as people who dont harm the property of others (our plant) will make less payment to society as they are causing less work for us collectively.

I agree Cleo, although i belive the current way of thinking that we are being sold by business interests would deny this fact. We are being told that we are 'consumers' and atomised individuals devoid of social and political context; the message is simple, if you want to be safe buy a big safe car and a big remote house and pay no attention to the disaster of others. Unfortunately when it comes to it a devided world is not a safe world. We are in this together.

This is the only thing i can see that american US culture reads: throw it away, dumb it or burn it and buy a new one (story repeats). There are a lot of places in the world dependent on air travel for their econemy, especially islands which do not have any other rapid link to the rest of the world. Consider the fact that many tourist areas preserve their ecology for tourism. No air travel and they'll have to tear up the rainforests and coral reefs to feed their people. The total carbon footprint of aviation is very small. If it tripled it would still be small. Aircraft are actually extremely effecient per-passenger.
