i think they both realised how awful it was but cher believed in it more than bowie. cher became popular in this medium and was shobiz, so though she may have realised in some sense that it was gross she did her show, while bowie was trying to promote his albums and keep in the public eye for all the ironic reasons. its like a one night stand after last call. both parties get something and feel dirty about it afterwards.

There's 2 possibilities here: 1. They both knew that they were deliberately presenting something that was stomach-churningly awful, in order to make an ironic statement about (A) how the showbiz meat-grinder turns even innovative music like Bowie's into just more brainless TV fodder, or (B) the deplorably low standards of showbiz in general and television in particular. 2. Only Bowie was aware of this, and Cher thought they were presenting something great. I'm going with #2.

I loved this tune the moment I put the needle to the 'album' 30 years ago. I saw Bowie on a Monday nite in 74 at MSG. He was still doing the space thing that really didnt work for me. I stuck with him because the rock tunes he penned were fabulous. Watching him and his band perform some 30 years later at the MSG 911 benefit was a special treat for me. Frankly, I prefer the mature, drug free Bowie.

As for this songs theme, it's a coment on deism and spiritualism and about having ardent passions for things that are mysterious, unearthly and unknown like God and the supernatural and so forth. Bowies never been the overtly religious type but he's stated, in recent interviews, that he does beleive in God and has become more spiritualy concernd in his older age.

He did say READ in the studio version. He's got years of lyrics to remember and this was the only pop track on Low. He didn't want people to buy this album when it was released. Side1 was ok with this and Breaking Glass. But upset to most die hard Bowie fans. I loved Speed of Life and played Always Crashing continually. But side2 made me think wow. As a kid I had never heard music like that. Brian Eno had a huge impact on Bowie and I know it must have later influenced bands like Kraftwerk.

I am just taking a stab in the dark here (I am not good with song meanings or symbolism). The title is "Ballad of Johnny and Mary", so I am guessing the symbolism has something to do with these two (doomed?) lovers. And Robert Palmer looks like a 1940s style newspaper reporter dude in the video. The video is very postmodern late 70s early 80s new wave style. I should maybe listen to the lyrics more closely. Sorry if this is totally the wrong idea! Robert Palmer had some great music videos.

After 3:05 When he says steely resolve is failling from me, there is another line... 'my poor soul all bruised passivity', i don't know why they cut it out - it ruins the flow of the song and is one of the best sung lines in it. Beautiful singing from a guy who wanted to show that despite the commercialism of the 80's and it's dissapointments compared to what went before... He still had it.

It is a great song I agree. Think it has similarities with "Heroes" and Teenage Wildlife (which are also similar to each other). I'd say Teenage Wildlife is the best of the three, probably my favourite Bowie song.

This is not a David Bowie song. It is a cover of a cover. Originally recorded by US group The McCoys, the hit version (in the UK that is) was by The Merseys and is FAR superior to Bowie's, but give him credit for bringing attention to this great song. And of course George Harrison referenced a line from it for The Beatles' "It's All Too Much".
