j'ai vu Dessay à Marseille dans Lakmé, avec Alain Fondary; elle DANSAIT en même temps qu'elle donnait son air. Les vieux du parterre en oubliaient de tousser, l'opéra entier en oubliait de respirer, et sa voix si ténue transperçait la salle jusqu'au paradis. Inoubliable.

Beautiful and solemn--but I don't hear any bell-like ringing in her upper register. She sings it a little too "full" to me rather than letting it ring. The bell sound does come out later in the final sequence of the aria, though. And of course, loving the trademark Dessay trill.

J'ai toujours considéré cette version comme étant la MEILLEURE (voix d'une beauté inouïe, lunaire, facilité des aigus, spécialement à 5'40'', et la note finale). De plus, sa voix aussi pure et claire que du cristal convient à merveille pour imiter les clochettes. Insurpassable !

Magnificent. And a lovely picture of our Emmanuelle. Thank you. I have never seen the male parts of chorus pay as much attention to a conductor! Though I think they were trying to stare down her cleavage lol! Emmanuelle specialises in voice and you can hear her coaching in all the singers here. As good a recording as you will ever here. I see from some of the comments that some people don't much care for baroque music, but, hey, they're the ones that clicked on this! Hell slap it in.

Excellent post! However, I believe Sonnambula was written with Pasta in mind, not Malibran. I'd enjoy Bartoli a lot more if she didn't aspirate so strangely. Also, her latest studio recordings of Bellini's arias are all too breathy... Maybe it's just a matter of personal taste -- she's certainly a phenomenal singer.

Sorry for the lecture =P, but to me Cecilia, as an sfogato Soprano of our times, by the fact that she can alternate, roles for Contralto, Mezzo, and Soprano, she'll give us an historically correct rendition. =) But Natalie, as I said before is good here. Kind Regards!

Testimonies of the time tell us that the main flaw of the soprano sfogato was the lack of homogeneity in the voice, something so priced in Mozart's time. The term soprano sfogato appeared at the same time as its greatest exponents: Isabella Colbran, Giuditta Pasta and Maria Malibran. Other example was Pauline Viardot, who alternated roles of soprano and contralto. In the 20th century the main exponent of this voice category was probably Maria Callas.

By definition, the soprano sfogato was linked to the contralto. She possessed a dark timbre with a rich and strong low register as well as the high notes of a soprano and occasionally a coloratura soprano. Those voices were typically large, dramatic and agile, supported by an excellent bel canto technique and an ability to sing in the tessitura as well as in the low tessitura with great ease.

This role was composed for the prima donna Maria Malibran, the rang of her voice was from D4 to D6, and she sang many roles for Rossini that now days are for mezzo, like Cenerentola ;), she alterned roles writen for mezzo, like Rosina, Tancredi or Romeo with others much more exigent like Norma, Semiramide, Amina and Adina, and the color of her voice was always dark, and she dominated the coloratura technics with virtuosism, so here in this role don't need a Light soprano but a Sfogato Soprano =)

I think that you are mistaking. so o.k most of the full soprano sing this roll but natalue brings some fresh air to this roll and besids in this roll the singer supposed to sing those fast coluratora technics and who sing it wonderfull if not dessay? let's see how she will sing this roll in 2009.... can't wait!

Well, you may consider me as an Idiot, but Dessay's voice is lovely here, but this role is not for her, she's a light soprano...and she has always been a light soprano, to me the bests roles that she has performed are (for example)Olympia, Ophelie and Lakme because their are for a light soprano. You should know that this role was made for a Mezzo, In fact Cecilia Bartoli is going to record this opera in its original version. =) Regards
