Music history is filled to overflowing with highly talented vocalists/instrumentalists who, after making their record, either scored low on the charts or, even worse, failed to chart altogether. They weren't necessarily all bad recordings; they simply did not get all the attention they needed. This is a pretty good example of such an act.

YES! I was thinking Robin Luke, but Carl is much closer! It really is amzing the sounds that never charted, it really blows my mind. What about Johnny's Little Miss Lonely, that was released when Dion, Barry Mann, Trade Martin were hitting it good with that style, most never even heard the song. I went crazy the first time I heard, in fact I bought my copy from Rich Rosen years & years ago, until then, I never heard it on the radio.

Wow, I can't believe the voice resemblence. I agree, Dion's voice would be very, very hard to do. Dion's voice is very distinctive & he was blessed with such a great voice. Is this the first pressing? I have the same exact record but the colors are switched (blue label with silver print). The instrumental is on the flip side of my copy. For some reason I've always thought my copy is a 2nd pressing because it has "Distributed by Roulette Records" on the label but I see that yours does too.

This record is in "The Jack Nitzche Story" released by Ace Records in 2005. Nitzche arranged this and records by Bobby Darin, Jackie DeShannon and others. The booklet points out that this record returned Laine to the singles charts after a 6-year absence. So even though it didn't rise very high, it was not a failure. It was a longshot for a 50-year-old veteran to do this type of material. When Laine came back on ABC it was with "I'll Take Care of Your Cares" in an adult Andy Wiiiams style.

He didn't stay in Nowhere land very long. Between 1967 and 1969 Frankie had 12 single recordings to hit the charts plus 4 albums all for ABC Records. Remember "Lord You Gave Me A Mountain"?

No Columbia knew he was leaving and didn't do anything to promote them. They were recorded in late 1963 but put out in 1964. Historical note: On the 23d of Nov 63, Frankie sat down with the big wigs at Columbia to talk about a new contract. In the middle of the meeting an aid rush in Shouting "The President has just been shot in Dallas." The meeting broke up and they never met again. It didn't seem that important anymore.

WOW! Now I just DL I'm Gonna Be Strong & Lonely Days Of Winter, they're dynomite! I didn't care too much for Take Her She's Mine and I can't find Up among The Stars. I will post the the 1st two, I think they're great! He probably didn't get much air time while on Columbia, because I don't remember any of them?

After this song which was his last Columbia recording to make it to the charts, he made several others before he got away from Columbia. Terry Melcher(Doris Day's son) was the producer and wanted to make him appeal to a younger generation. Frankie made "Take Her She's mine","I'm Gonna Be Strong", "Up Amoung The Stars" and "Lonely Days Of Winter" No hits but a lot of misses. No wonder he didn't try hard to stay at Columbia, Mitch Miller where were You?

As I understand it, Frankie Laine had high hopes for this Jack Nietchke-produced single and was disappointed that it didn't do anything on the charts. But Frankie was 50 years old at the time and had had more than 60 hits in a completely different style and the rock 'n roll audience was not about to embrace him at that point.

In the middle Fiftie's I was 11 years old and heard songs by him I liked, but not ones I would ever buy, This is the only one of his I have in my collection. But he was a great singer.

This is a great Frankie Laine song, I bought the 45 when it came out. Many years later I discovered a version by "The Shadows, It's pretty good also.

Unfortunately for Frankie, he was a bit too old and had too many miles on him to appeal to the younger market by the time he made this record. When he did have another hit, it was in an older, Andy Williams style. Too bad.!
