Are you the Big Lebrosky? Probably heard that a billion times.

Eloquently and most rightly put lebarosky.

Can you smell the exhaust from the old ford station wagon.. and dogs runnin loose, stingrays in the streets, Vietnam on the news, and the smell of barbecues around the setting sun...

This song, this album, are examples of synchronicity: felicitous combination of people and circumstance. We get the blues from two different points of view, with a great R&B foundation, and two matchless virtuosos playing together. Kinda like if Beethoven and Schubert got together and jammed.

Very true what you say about Bobby's influence and contributions, Machewes. Growing up in Memphis, and being just a little younger than Bobby, I had the privilege of seeing him in a few clubs during the time he was working at Stax. As you probably know, it was in a Memphis club that Delaney and Bonnie discovered him, a huge break for him and a blessing for all of us who have enjoyed his music for years. A truly underappreciated talent.

A childhood favourite from my fave album of all time. Clapton and Allman = matchless. The blues tracks are definitive performances. Just reading the book check it out, and the excellent Allman Bros biog.

My only regret is that in terms of off-the-cuff creativity and writing genius, Clapton (My opinion only; don't stone me, please!)peaked on this album and began a slow spiral downward. Was it the combined creative genius of the collective band, the continued heroin useage, or had he simply reached his zenith....or all three? I don't know; Eric probably wouldn't know.
By: Machewes. on 07 Dec 08, 14:26:03
I agree and think I used a poor choice of words in "fall in line". It's just that Whitlock was and is practically ignored when anyone talks about Layla. Many don't know of his Stax background which layed the R&B foundation for the music. Both Clapton and Allman were more steeped in pure blues. The songwriting gave both new R&B ground to chart and they took it over the top. A shame Bobby dissappeared, but he did an excellent remake of Layla this year. Can never top the Layla album though.

Not arguing about Whitlock's brilliance, but the rest of the gang didn't need to fall in line; each a genius in his own right! Clapton; need I say more? Duane Allman (ditto) Jim Gordon....probably one of the most in-demand studio artists in the world at this point in time!!!! Carl Radle...he is just there, always right, always perfect. This was one of those examples of meteoric proportions so epic, so profound, you know it couldn't last. And it didn't. How could you ever top this album?

Long time guitar player, music lover....I have to say, this was, and remains, probably the most influential album in my life..it has shaped my love and appreciation for guitar and the blues and sets the standard by which all others are judged; whether I like it or not. Totally underrated, even in it's day. But not by me!!
By: harposrevenge1995. on 07 Dec 08, 03:40:14
if you want to see a great version of this song, look at the derek trucks version from crossroads 2007 festival. pure magic. Clapton is a writing and arranging genious

Bobby Whitlock's influence on the Layla album is way under-esitmated or appreciated. His Stax background layed the foundation for the sound of the record and the incredible talent of everyone else just fell in line. One of best records of all time.

That is quite an impressive group of names to work with. I just know that Spector basically defined popular music with his signature wall of sound whichh was an extremely popular style back in the 50's and 60's, and even today in some cases. I personally don't like Spector's music, I just know he was influential. The list of artists you showed is more my style, I like every name you put up there.

Phil doesn't hold a candle to Tom, not even close.(Google Tom Dowd discography,you'll see what I'm talking about)Tom has worked with John Coltrane,Charlie Mingus,Dizzy Gillespie,Charlie Parker,Ray Charles,Aretha Franklin,Otis Redding,Wilson Pickett,The Drifters,Ben E. King,Cream,The Allman Brothers,The Rascals,Eric Clapton,Lynyrd Skynyrd,Rod Stewart,Stills&Young,Chicago,The James Gang,The Bee Gees,Diana Ross, I could keep going, but you get the idea. He will always be the top history maker...
By: fpcrunner. on 26 Nov 08, 17:42:06
What about Phil Spector. I don't really think anybody was more important than him when it comes to overall influence on popular music.
By: mauirob69. on 25 Nov 08, 02:45:33
If I remember correctly, Tom Dowd stated in the liner notes of the 20th anniv. album that he did the initial mix in 2 or 3 days! "Layla...", is one of the greatest rock records ever made and Tom had a lot to do with it as far as introducing Eric & Duane, guiding them in the right direction, giving fatherly advice, etc. Tom has the most impressive resume in the business. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can top Tom's achievements as far as history goes. He was a legend in his own time...

one of the best songs I have ever heard.
By: timmy47. on 23 Oct 08, 06:20:47
well im just saying the opening slide part goes into the rhythm and the part that comes in later that i mentioned goes into the solo. so im pretty sure the opening slide in eric and the other is duane. and just because duane says he came up with that intro, doesnt mean he played it. you can he duane in the intro still but not as much as eric.

Duane is the man! great song
By: erikisderek. on 22 Oct 08, 17:05:19
Chuck Kirkpatric actually penned the track sheets - the copies that were included in the Layla Session box set. As it is indicated on track 3 - Duane is playing lead and on track 4 Clapton is playing rhythmn. Well, who's to say that slide is rhythmn or lead? But it is known that Duane did play a strat for quite some time before switching to the LP. Maybe he did play Eric's. Up until this album Eric was never known to record with slide. Interviews with Duane - he states he created that intro.
By: timmy47. on 22 Oct 08, 07:56:17
that cant be right. if you listen, the opening slide work goes right into the rhythm track, which you said is clapton. it sounds like his strat as well. i think duanes slide comes in at the pre chrous. that sounds more like him. although, clapton said that they did trade guitars but he never said if they recorded while on each others guitars.

Don't trust internet myths on who played what as the ones spreading those myths weren't even born at that time! Chuck Kirkpatrick, one of the engineers of Layla sessions, made some comments on youtube a while ago. Hope he pounds the judge's hammer and clarifies this long time unsolved mystery.
