Those scale theories are born in dusty university faculties. Lenny Breau, Wes Montgomery and many more did'nt care about modes at all. They just let their improvisational ideas guide by chords and harmonies. Do you care about the grammar and cases when you are expressing your feelings with language or words? Scaletheorie is just something to analyse music under scientific rules.

howdy lefty, got to take issue with that. degruy seems to always choose the same chord to "harmonic" over and it wouldn't matter to lenny ....know what i mean? and as much respect as i've got for phil, his lenny'isms come off sounding like the corny version instead the lesson in sensitivity that you can count on from lenny... who's the truest articulator? the trailblazer or the disciple?

Most of Lenny's cascading or chordal harmonics are just sustained scales. The amazing thing is,Lenny knew which voicings and associated added notes, would evoke any type of scale. Dorian, Melodic Minor, ,Altered even exotic pentatonic scales. Loads of players can play the crap out this "Cascading Harmonic Technique" So far, it seems, only Lenny has viewed the fretboard it such a unique way.

The hell is that thing at 4:30??? I'd consider that Pat Metheny's statement about the cascading harmonics is a little dated. There are a lot of people who can do it, but the thing is, Lenny had this ability to just see the separation of the octaves and put together these chords on the fly... it's pretty serious what he does LOL

If you know the usual choices of changes for the bridge in "Georgia" check out Lenny's re-harmonization. After all of the thick, extension ladened voicing's of the first 2 choruses, Lenny's harmonic texture in the bridge is lighter, yet still has a deep harmonic element. The use of Hybrid structures: Cm9/Ab, Fma9/Bb.and the more classica harmonies and stepwise bass lines: Dm/F, Em7, Ebma7, lends a unique element to the bridge of "Georgia"Much like Satie, or Ravel might have come up with.

This documentary isn't available. Lenny's performance of Georgia is from a CBC show called "A Touch of Jazz" and is available for purchase from the Winnipeg CBC archives, as are other shows Lenny played on.

Ted Greene was one certainly one of upper echelon guitar giants. He could do harmonics as well as Breau and was pretty much an encyclopedia of music knowledge. Obviously you have never heard him play. Breau totally respected him and commented on him in Guitar Player magazine. Have you seen his books Chord Chemistry, Modern Chord Progressions or Single Note Soloing? They are like Barry Galbraith books timeless master pieces.
