No, the Vienna Phil. did not have women players (it's by INVITATION to join the Phil. Society) until the late 1990's. This would have had to be around 1983-85 gauging by von Karajan's appearance. It's funny though... when I was on the board of the Detroit Symphony there was a big push to change the audition policies. "Blind Auditions" where we could only HEAR the players were both "sexist" and "racist" since only white men seemed to qualify for orchestra seats...

I was lucky enough to actually view and listen to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra play the entire 40 minutes and 4 movements of this piece. It was so beautilly done! Later that year, I played the fourth movement in my schools concert band. Loved it. I can still play the song on my flute from memory. :)

Wonderful piece of music. Wonderful conductor. It wouldn't hurt for him to show a little more emotion, but the orchestra took his conducting well. I love this! It reminds me of my orchestral days in Chattanooga, Tn. 1990-1993. We had wonderful conductor's and I can remember every note of this symphony, 1st and 2nd violin, oboe and etc. like it was just last week.

I like this piece, it varies a lot yes. But that because this piece is about the Battle of Borodino, Russia's defense against Napoleon's advancing army, which is why it changes so much throughout. It goes from pre-battle where it's all soft and pretty, with inspiration from the French national anthem to loud and aggressive, which is depicting the battle.

I would like to appeal to all the people who are making negative comments about the bells. Firstly they are supposed to be loud and 'out of rhythm'. I've played church bells in this piece for Classic FM and I can tell you that when you're wearing the proper ear protection and playing the part as intended it's very hard to hear the orchestra. The bell player is probably one of the best young percussionists in Germany given that he's playing for the Berlin Philharmonic.

Beuatiful piece!!! I would kill to be able see the first violin section play 00:33-00:46 on this video. You can't imagine how hard that part is on a first violin. I wish they could've showed their bows right there, because I'm sure they were all just about to tear the horse hair off their poor little bows. Well whoever told you that was wrong. The french system bassoon is similar to that of a german system bassoon, except it differs in keywork and bore dimensions. The cor anglais is a completely different instrument from the bassoon. It is in essence a tenor oboe. It has a long conical bore with a pear shaped bell and a slightly curved bocal which leads to a reed similar to an oboe. It is actually quite different than the bassoon, except for the double reed.

The English horn, one of my favorite instruments. I still dont get it, though. It's neither English, nor really a horn. The bocal on it has that obtuse-angle shape that we see with the necks of the alto sax and the alto clarinet. I wonder why they didn't just call the English horn an alto oboe? There's clarinets and oboes. On one hand, the clarinets have single-reed mouthpieces in which the reeds are on the bottom of the mouthpiece. Oboes, on the other hand, have double-reed mouthpieces in which two reeds are tied together leaving a little space in between. You could say that it's just a reed and not even a mouthpiece, lol

Hmmm...I just checked it in the notation software that I have. It's actually in between the oboe and the Englosh horn. It's roughly a minor 3rd below the standard oboe, so I guess a major 3rd above the English horn.

It's the fourth highest instrument in the oboe family that plays, i believe, and correct me if i'm wrong, a perfect 5th above the oboe. It's basically the counterpart to the English Horn. It's supposed to have a sweeter tone than a regular oboe.

dagdas01, I don't know if you'll come back on to read this but this was recorded 1988 as part of a live concert series recording cycle. And yes, "getting on in years" would be understating it a bit. Von Karajan was 80 years old at the time of this recording. He died a year later. No doubt about it, he was a brilliant musical mind, never using a score and "playing" the orchestra as his "instrument" with passion and power.

Actually, MaxxUS08, if you go to the website of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, you will find several products for sale. Also, I'd like to note that it is a very typical thing for European conductors to conduct on the upbeat, thus the "delay." Finally, to the moron who dares call someone as tenured and legendary as Claudio Abbado useless....well, you should probably stick to MTV and Saturday morning cartoons.

I'm norwegian, and since that play is norwegian I should know about it, it's very normal to use that play in school plays and make the kids dress up like trolls, because the teachers cant come up with something else. Yes, I agree. Mozart may have been composing symphonies from the age of 4, but Mahler is even more of a musical genius. I've tried to write music - I know how hard it is to write something that's not a steaming pile of crap. I still have yet to do that. :D Mahler's symphonies are definitely not steaming piles of crap. They are steaming piles of emotion.
