Yes I know, anyone can name a thousand other Beatles songs that they personally prefer, and we could sit here for days arguing meaninglessly over one song being "better" than another. I personally prefer this one over any of the ones youve chosen. As for "Yesterday" or "Let It Be", Id rather listen to the sound of spring lambs being slaughtered ("well hello Clarice") than either of those vastly overrated whinefests.

There's no reason to equate rawness or edginess with individualism, or polish with pandering. I see paul's post-Beatles creations as being obviously self-directed, and inventive rather than derivative. A huge amount of his music is nonconformist, eccentric, and quirky. It may not be to your liking, but that is another matter.

BTW, one of the ways to determine a song's complexity is to play it on piano. A song like "Dear Prudence" sounds great after the Beatles arranged it and recorded it, but try playing it on the piano....it is really quite an embarassingly elementary song, structurally.

Absolutely right. I think John was inspired, for sure. But Paul had a higher "musical IQ." I think that is more than just my opinion; I am certain it can be empirically demonstrated. And....I think John knew it. His two favorite songs from the Beatles were Paul's ("Hey Jude" and "Here, There, and Everywhere.") John was quite self-critical.

Have to agree with you; if we wrote the Beatles' classics under two headings, "John" and "Paul", the latter would be much longer. Paul was not only more prolific, but more consistent. If you want to hear beautiful melodies and interesting chords, you only have to listen to "Martha, My Dear", "Fixing A Hole", "She's Leaving Home", "The Long And Winding Road", "I Will", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "Let It Be", "Dear Boy", Little Lamb/Drangonfly" and numerous others.

maybe so but it works the other way too, you can't deny i don't know, there's just this quality of brilliance that john had on his songs that paul mccartney didn't capture on many of his songs for example the white album starts out with Back in the U.S.S.R, which is a fun song, but Dear Prudence follows it which is one of the greatest songs ever. paul mccartney's highlights on that album were Helter Skelter, and blackbird johns was julia, dear prudence, revolution, Happiness, cry baby cry...

A Paul song called "Winter Rose" comes to mind. It's brilliantly simple, like Imagine. But Paul wrote tons of 'em. Not just a few. You name it; "brilliantly simple," "staggeringly complex," whatever - Paul has created it. I think Paul could have done Walrus. Maybe Paul made a huge contribution to that recording, as he did for Tomorrow Never Knows. John did the tune, but the sound-painting was Paul's idea? I bet Paul was John's inspiration for Walrus, truth be told.

Yes, very Why Don't We Do It In the Road. I like when Paul would get all crazy like this. He has so much potential to just lose it. Alot of people see him as tame and sweet, but he had a real primal sound that could get very wild and out there. I heard a radio interview with George Martin years ago in which he dismissed many of the drug theories about the Beatles' songs, including "Lucy..." and "A Day in the Life", saying that the first was based on a drawing made by little Julian and the second on a newspaper article. I agree with the last part of your comment. Last night on the BBC, there was a clip of a Paul McCartney interview in which he admitted to having used LSD four times. I can see where John whould interpret the attacks, and How Do You Sleep, was aimed at paul, but there were obviously references at himself as well, such as "Jump When your Momma Tells you Anything." And Lucy In The Sky didn't have anything to do with LSD. He would have admitted to that. Like he did with I Am The Walrus. He said the first two lyrics in I Am The Walrus Were seperate acid trips. Now in Paul's defence, he was involved, in the "Paul is Dead" hoax. They never admited, and some people believed, obviously others didn't, as that is how it started. When the Paul is Dead hoax started, and the Beatles caught on, they began putting in "clues" in their songs about it. And yet not one of them came forward as said, "Ha! Yeah, we did that for laughs." John was great, especially in the beatles, but can you imagine him putting out something this idea-rich and musically varied? I can't. After the Beatles, Mccarntey was just on a tear, creatively, like an eccentric genius, but Lennon was getting by on his laurels, for the most part. No wonder he was depressed much of those years. He just couldn't keep up with his rival, and he knew it.

Thanks Ed for your response! Circus music mag and RS among others criticized the RAM album and Linda's harmonies with Paul as "a high school glee club". Linda's adventures with the Beatles, the Doors and Hendrix showed she knew the Rock scene more clearer than her critics! She was an equal creative force that even Lennon never criticized that I can recall. Paul misses her imput as much as John's creative genius but seems to shine at the crisis' moments of his life!

WiltatKansas, actually the lyrics were pretty bold for that time, when premarital sex for example was a key conflict between the generations. The lyrics you quoted, and the variation he sings "But listen to her Daddy's song, making love is wrong" combined with his later mantra "We believe that we can't be wrong" really addresses the differences in generations if not the whole 60's movement. Hardly a "sweet melody without meaning!"

This, Paul's first solo album, is the only really good music he has done since the Beatles broke. Everything after was insufferably lightweight, sing song and shallow. (I'll duck now.) However, I absolutely love this album (I call it the "Cherries" album 'cause of the cover) and have played it constantly for years. I also love everything the Beatles ever did and a lot of what John and George did afterwards. Sorry if my opinion offends anyone - just personal taste.

I read about this song around the time "Off the Ground" was released, It was a passive dig at John, every time he'd meet up with John, John would never having anything positive to say to Paul. In response, Paul would just let it roll off and "smile away". That was the long and short of their relationship at the time. Couldn't agree more. I get fed up of people writing on youtube about how much better a songwriter John was. Based on what? Perhaps these people are unaware of how many classics Paul has written: "Yesterday", "Michelle", "Eleanor Rigby", "She's Leaving Home", "Fool on the Hill", "Hey Jude", "The Long And Winding Road", to name but a few. Sure, John wrote some great songs, but Paul wrote a lot more and you won't find a serious musician anywhere who will dispute that.

I agree with you that a lot of his work was "insufferably lightweight" but he did some great work in the seventies. Girl's School, Rock Show, Hi Hi Hi, Name and Address are but of his few underrated songs from that period. Unfortunately, he surrounded it with a lot of nonsense. Still love his music though.

This, Paul's first solo album, is the only really good music he has done since the Beatles broke. Everything after was insufferably lightweight, sing song and shallow. (I'll duck now.) However, I absolutely love this album (I call it the "Cherries" album 'cause of the cover) and have played it constantly for years. I also love everything the Beatles ever did and a lot of what John and George did afterwards. Sorry if my opinion offends anyone - just personal taste.

This song was a little touch of Paul playing studio genius, you have the simple lyric, simple uke, one or two notes on the electric piano, while paying homage to the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" harmonies. Simplicity was the beauty of those early Paul solo albums. He tried to move the Beatles into that simplicity with "Get Back" but it just couldn't work. 1970-1972 was Paul going back to his roots and charting that course he hoped the Beatles would have followed.

This song originally came out as a 45 (which I wore out) just few months after McCartney's first Wings album "Wild Life" (his 3rd after departing the Beatles) back in 1971.
