Percussion can be like salt. You get used to it and miss out on the subtleties of your food. Music, especially Bach, is very rich and doesn't always need salt. Percussion used purposefully by composers is of course a different story -- it's part of the fabric. Even Bach used percussion to great effect, but it's really a hindrance to add it where it doesn't belong. But I share your enthusiasm for smalin's work -- and for Bach!

I think I read that they were for CPE. When I began organ lessons in college (I had studied the piano, was a Bach fan, was writing fugues), I told the instructor I wanted to learn the organ so that I could play the Bach trio sonatas. He laughed and said, "you've picked some of the hardest organ music ever written." I don't know whether I agree, but I doubt Bach thought these pieces were easy.

THAT was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. So beautifully crafted. Almost like early "home copy" of a popular song, before recorded sound. This was the way it was recorded? I've always been amazed at player pianos and nickelodians, but that is the incredible thing I've seen. Oh, and because I know that music, I really loved it. Better for what? I've spent somewhere between 5000 and 10000 hours practicing the piano, and it is fun to play, but it's fun to use the conductor program, too, and it doesn't take nearly as much practice. I expect that playing the pianola would be something like playing the conductor program.

Actually, that version was done by somebody else, using Finale, many, many years ago. Incidentally, I'm working on a version of the score that is closer to the way I originally notated it: few if any markings and no bar-lines. The heavily marked score and the YouTube video are good for getting an idea of the expressive intent of the piece, but the notes-only score is much easier to read during a performance.

I really like the quick-changing harmonies in this composition. A lot of contemporary art music these days is devoid of harmonic structure and contrapuntal writing. It's great to see that there is still an appreciation for harmony among serious composers of art music. :) By the way, I checked out your website and looked at the score for this piece of music (PDF with markings) and it looked quite professional. What software did you use for typesetting it?

Yeah, I'm just a rigidly classical kind of guy ... and lazy to boot ... you've nailed it. :-) Seriously, what would a "more descriptive" name be like? It's a free-form piece with a passacaglia, a canon, a fugue, some free passages (including a dreamy section based on material from the passacaglia), all held together with harmonies and melodies that are all quartal ... that's a description, but not a name ... I don't see how I could be more descriptive than "Fantasy in F" in ten letters ...

The only thing different between this version and the distorted one is the addition of a 20KHz sine wave to fool YouTube's compressor. But I know what you mean; when I was working on this piece, I happened to listen to it played back in a different key (due to a slow tape recorder), and I could hardly recognize it! I didn't think I had perfect pitch, but I'd apparently learned to hear it a certain way. So I know that getting more familiar with it will help you hear it better.

It might just be that this is the second time I've heard the piece, but there seems to be alot more clarity. Not only in the audio quality, but in the performance too? Me too (CCS, Fricker, Krebs; also Musgrave) except no organ major (though I studied it a little). I started in 1973, left in 1975, returned in 1979; BA in 1980; taught in CCS in 1981 (as a "guest lecturer," thanks to Mudrick); this was lucky, since it showed me, early on, that I wouldn't be happy as a university professor. Krebs was the best. I wrote this fugue in memoriam; the quote from the WTC is from a memory of playing that fugue with him, 4-hand, in his office. A real mensch.

This is incredible! Is this the same Stanley Krebs who taught theory and the history of Soviet Music at UCSB in the 60s and 70s? If it is, he was my professor when I was an undergraduate music major at the university. Sometimes he would take our theory class out to the campus cliffs to watch the whales!

Loved the dragnet fugue, was disappointed with this one. subject was too weak/too long. you did good things with it during the exposition though. around 2nd entry of soprano seemed to fall apart. perhaps too ambitious due to subject! seems like you gave up writing the fugue after that wasn't as good as exposition. seems like the ideas took precedent over the sound. musical staircase: sounded good at first wiff. actual bite not so tasty!

awesome because the theme has many elements of high romantic period and fugue is rare there so it's like a combination of baroque contrapuntal technique onto a romantic theme in a sense so very interesting...almost sounds like a fugue towards the end of some romantic slavic/dvorcakian/mendelssohnian scottish symphony type deal

It sounds rather than a chorale prelude or other sort of work with a tune and composed for four voices as a rely fugue( compare with fugues from Baroque era, not only J.S.Bach's, but also Buxtehude's, Boehm's and many others, or from another period, for example Romanticism)

Well, as your reply aptly indicates, there are many ways of being in love. Actually, the Nokia Tune is a quotation from Gran Vals, a musical composition by Francesco Tarrega for solo guitar. The work was then bought by Nokia. From what I understand, the piece of music is now in public domain. :)

Smalin, this is one of my favorite pieces. Thank you. For anyone still looking for the score, you can often find it amended to The Art of Fugue, also composed near the end of Bach's life. Dover has a combined publication of The Art of Fugue, A Musical Offering, and this piece all together. This chorale prelude is often referred to as "Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit" and can be found along with some recordings of The Art of Fugue.

No, it's a chorale setting (it might be a "chorale prelude" ... I'm not sure about the technical term), and it's common in those to take each line from the original choral tune, do something with it, and then move on to the next line. In this one, all the voices do each theme (with the pedals doing it half as fast).

I've watched a few of these piano roll videos you've made now and I have to say it is fascinating. It has the greatest effect for me with the baroque music where the counterpoint jumps out and hits you in the face. I didn't care for the Liszt and Chopin so much. Good work. Keep it up.

Yes, this is the first time I've used a clavichord on any of my videos. Bach dictated this piece on his deathbed, when he was blind. I think of the clavichord as the "bedroom" instrument (since it's quiet enough that you can play it at night without waking your spouse). If Bach ever heard this piece (aside from hearing it in his head), it's possible he heard it on a clavichord.
