Like this video, but the one on Pascal's wager kinda made me pause. You asked people to bet everything they own on a number, which would assume that one who does not bet is taking the "Safe bet" because they get to keep everything. Right... So Rorty makes use of the Heideggerian notion of 'coping'. So, the question is not whether some value 'pops' up at one time or other through history so much as whether or not it helps you cope with the world about you. That said, Rorty has admitted that freedom is just what he likes and the kind of value that he would be willing to find solidarity with others in support of. It isn't THE value, it is just (one of) THE value(s) that Rorty cares about.

Rorty is saying that, whether or not one finds it therapeutic, labeling tolerance a "timeless truth" never helped anyone suffering from the oppression of slavery. What did help were books like "Uncle Tom's Cabin", which allowed politically active whites to identify with suffering African-Americans via an appeal to Christian decency. Such literature leads to active projects. Most intellectual treatises (Dworkin, Foucault, etc.) have no such effect.

Surely we desire freedom but it doesn't follow that we get to absolution or static, unchanging truths from there. Anyhow, the idea of such truths seem more contrary to freedom from nature than they are controlling of nature since we ourselves get categorized and subjugated just like everything else in nature. And that alone assumes that such truths that are out there for our attainment are even coherent and sensible.

Human beings can be effected by their environment, but unlike birds, human beings can also defy environmental effects and indeed mold the environment. I think an analysis of history would find other values more useful in other times and places but I'll put that opinion aside. What I'm interested in addressing is the question of contingency. By analogy, consider Darwin who viewed the perseverance of species as contingent on evolution's capacity to improvise in their environment. Birds evolved wings via this relationship and they've had them for a long time. But it doesn't follow that there's something absolute and timeless about wings.

One can examine history and see that things like freedom, solidarity, and justice have been continuosuly espoused or needed. I disagree. Values like freedom and solidarity are significant for Rorty, not in the sense that they're ironed into some rationalized fabric or some metaphysical framework. They're contingent on our historical situation and if there were say, some other values that seemed more beneficial to pragmatic goals, 'freedom and solidarity' may well have to go.

You know... it seems to me that Rorty has a point about the "breaking down" of philosophical systems with a sort of linguistic gymnastics. Thus, one might say of Rorty's philosophy that (as presented above) that freedom and solidarity are truths, since he seems to think that they have incredible practical weight. However, then we run into the WHY... why, pray tell, should anyone try to get by? What does beneficial mean? What's beneficial for Hitler isn't beneficial for Jewish people.

In the big picture it's not truth, rule or utilitarianism. It's simply a stance, an attitude, a way of thinking. Rorty is quick to agree that his views on truth and pragmatism at their base have no stronger foundation than others. If the criterion of our endeavors is Truth then we run into problems because we put ourselves in this old tradition of being the unknowing seekers of truth as a sort of reality on the other side of the fence. The upshot of Rorty is that there is no other side. For Rorty it's not that everything comes into doubt as with solipsism, it's that there is no Truth or Reality in any important sense except in the sense in which it's helpful.

The only material I have seen on Rorty is this video so I might be misinterpreting his views, but it seems to me that his philosophical viewpoint is almost a form of solipsism. well that difficult thing is that dewey was himself very ambiguous in his writing. his epistemological ideas could be interpreted as either an individual "creating knowledge by interacting" or "creating interactions to establish knowledge". those who agree with the latter (haack) think very low of those who agree with the former (rorty).

Nice video :) I would have to say that I have experienced the same feelings just listening to a song I love (non-religious) and talking a walk outside by myself. I think people go to church or believe in a god because of the spiritual "high" they get from it. I mean that's why I was so into church sometimes. The songs would REALLY get to me though. It's almost like a "giddy" feeling you get, and that makes people actually think that they experienced something "special". It's just a feeling.

Sounds like we had some similar childhood experiences. Although, as a male, I wasn't suppose to flop around on the floor like a fish as the females did. Yet, I too was taught and encouraged to speak in tongues. But I never did till I was drafted and sent to Nam. One night my position came under fire. I grabbed the mike to radio the command post. Its interesting how many people have similar experiences. I wonder if the majority really feel any special connection to the supernatural, or merely persuade themselves so. It sounds like a kind of stage hypnotism, with the nonsense chanting and the sheer expectation that something is going to happen. That's not what the bible says. Isaiah 45:7 says, "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things." And John 1:3 says "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." Note that it says ALL things are made by God, not that only the good nice things come from God and the bad things come from sin. And how can we be in absence of God if God is omnipresent?

I have been following this for some time (a couple years) and I have never taken an alarmist approach to it. I still don't, but there there are a lot of people out there that need to pay more attention.
