Yes, she was gold medalist in piano at the Milan Conservatory. As Galli-Curci herself relates, it was the composer Mascagni who encouraged her to take up singing. Interestingly, Lily Pons was also trained originally to have a career as a pianist, and Pons states her first ambition before that was to be a ballerina.

I don't recall Callas' commenting on Galli-Curci, though she did sort of make fun of Tetrazzini's canary-like singing. I can't imagine styles of singing more different than those of Galli-Curci and Callas, but I like both. Sutherland and Galli-Curci indeed admired one another. I also know that Farrar and Galli-Curci were friends and praised each other's singing.

She was very fond of the dramatic voice. She was a big fan of Rosa Raisa. The actually both were fond of each other. Rosa Ponselle and Joan Sutherland look up idealy to Galli-Curci. Though I don't know If Callas looked up to her or made any comments of her singing.

On the other hand, several light sopranos have successfully sung Konstanze's aria and even the role itself. I think of Hempel, Ivogun, and, more recently, Sills.

Thanks for your kind words. It is unlikely Galli-Curci would ever have sung Konstanze's aria since it requires a dramatic coloratura voice. But she sometimes interpolated the Queen of the Night's vengeance aria into her Lesson Scene in Il Barbiere (although I'm pretty sure she never sang the role). The only Mozart aria she recorded is Cherubino's aria from Marriage of Figaro. However, I read somewhere that after her retirement, she would entertain guests by singing Suicidio from La Gioconda!

Actually, a lot of my information about Galli-Curci comes from books and articles written about her, some from record notes of her albums, singers' recollections, other record collectors, and sources one has contact with in the course of living. Some of the information may be inaccurate (as is the case for all singers), or not recalled accurately (a by-product of aging), but most likely there is some truth to it. I'm glad you appreciate this trivia and, more importantly, Galli-Curci's singing.

Continued--Not many people realize this, but Galli-Curci did sing in German. Among her final recordings were lieder by Schubert and others. Unfortunately, these records were never released and presumably destroyed; but one can still hope they turn up one day, having been buried in some collector's vault!

Continued--Obviously, she had more talent than Gatti was willing to admit. At the same time, she had more spirit, aware of her worth as a singer. There was the Milan incident, in which she rejected the small role of Lisa in Sonnambula and kept her promise never to sing at La Scala. She also had a rivalry with Frieda Hempel. But Galli-Curci was philosophical in accepting her retirement and she followed the Indian guru Yogananda's teachings. Her motto was "simplicity, sincerity, serenity."

According to what I read, the manager of the Met at the time, Gatti, rejected Galli-Curci because he was romantically involved with Barrientos (before his marriage to Alda). Later, Galli-Curci was hired in an effort to replace Caruso as an opening-night attraction in Traviata, with Gigli (his debut as well) and De Luca. Gatti writes about Galli-Curci's lack of talent in his memoirs although he says she had a gentle personality. I disagree with his assessment of her, perhaps in both respects.

I think you're right. I wonder how she managed the final scene, considering the lightness of her voice. But, after all, she was quite convincing as Violetta and highly praised for her dramatic singing in the role. Galli-Curci sang several interesting roles earlier in her career which she later abandoned, including Sophie in Rosenkavalier, and the title role of Annetta in Crispino e la comare.
