You're welcome. I don't know if its the same with you but whenever I witness Buddy's thoughtful drum compositions, every stroke, buzz and accent has an effect over me. Pretty much like if I were playing them myself. This is where the musical pleasure comes from. I just imagine myself doing all those beautifully musical accents all over the kit and every calculated move as if they were mine. Its all worthy. Genius. One of a kind.

Wow! Thanks for the complaiment, Cadaverr. Buddy incredible dynamics, cymbal elegants, blazing technique, and maticulious attention to details is what separates this drum wonder from the norm. I've heard and seen the current drum wonders of today, such as Thomas Lang and Virgil Dontati (who have incredible limb independency and technique) who play with great virtuosity, but the lack the musical elements that separates Buddy from them. Without the theme, or musical groove--it doesn't work for me.

That was, no doubt, one of the best comprehensions on Buddy's playing I've ever come across. I guess we're all blessed for being able to understand at least part of that guy's genius playing. The way he thought and played those phrasings was of an immense, monumental sense of swing. Its certainly fast, but its soooo damn musical. Otherworldly. Drum rudiments were never understood in such a way again. No matter what genre, time and drum field. NO ONE has EVER understood rudiments like Buddy Rich.

There is no dispute that BR is the greatest drummer who ever lived and will live, but drummers who are serious musicians and studied well will all tell you that Buddy's left hand is impossible to believe. No one, I mean NO ONE else has ever or will come close to that AMAZING LEFT HAND.

Exactly! You know people have said this all too often; He not just throwing around mindless licks, chops, and displaying how fast he is, but he's actually articulate, arranging accents, and putting together pieces of techiques in sequence in a musical way. There are alot of great drummers that can imitate him in speed and chop wise, but they fail miserably in the musical sense and style. I'm sorry, that's something your born with. Frank Sinatra compared him with Mozart.He was not of this earth!

Thank GOD! Its always great when someone like you appear. Just a bunch are really able to understand that there was Buddy, and then everybody else. There is not one single "modern drummer" that could match that man's unbelievable TALENT. Unbelievable musical compositions of complex drum solos and astonishing technique to make it all possible. Wow! I seen hundreds upon hundreds of drums solo at my old age. Drums legends includes: Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Louis Bellson, Billy Cobham, Weckl, Colauita, Lang, Mayer, just to name a few. This undoubtable the best solo, I've ever seen! The speed, the dexterity, the composition, and construction of this monumental solo is ungodly! It's was almost science fiction-like. He was the best--hands down!

At around 06:43, Buddy peaks his single stroke speed in what I believe to be, at LEAST, 20 very loud and strong trad. grip single strokes. Yes, I know, no one believes it, but, just pay attention to that moment and its progression... There were so many great drummers watching him that night... He prob. went nuts and surpassed his own limits to shock 'em. There is absoutely no doubt in my mind that, judging from his non stop speed progression, bud "riches" around 20 to more singles per second.

Buddy typically brings the single-stroke roll to 116 on the metronome, which is 8x116 = 928 beats per minute. This is not a world record; we can see FASTER on YouTube, but we DON'T see wrists, nor controlled variation of volume, we see uncontrolled fingerwork, "the Sport of Drumming"! This speed translates to 928/120 = 7.7 beats per hand per second, which calculation agrees with yours, in the region of 14 - 15 beats per second. (And I am NOT knocking the speed champions - I wish I could do it!)

Yes, thats actually accurate. We really have lots of people out there trying to reveal Buddy's "secrets" but never really reproduce him at the same speed and power. I mean, 13 to 14 loud notes per second using pure hand technique. We have guys like Derrick Pope and Dave Weckl, both showing off their own Buddy Rich interpretation (and how they fail miserably on doing it! Its not even comparably as fast). As you said it, Buddy was all wrists. He had confirmed it himself before. Just freaking fast.

Incidentally, on Jojo Mayer "Buddy's Secret Weapon," vidio he specifically refers to the long push-pulls Buddy liked to play. (Specifically, he talks about Buddy doing that on the cymbals.)

The passage at :51 to :55 is great: Buddy's right hand is push-pulling those sixteenth notes at around 220 bpm while his left is merely adding accents on the quarter beats. He does that sort of stuff throughout his solos, but the position on his hands and the camera work here really make it easy to see. No one else is that fast, in my opinion.

This footage is from the Sinatra;Concert for the Americas (1978?) I believe this was before or just after Buddy took one of his many heart attacks (take a good look at him, you can see he is not well) but despite that, he always put on a great show. Even after drumming for over 20 years (playing a lot of Bussy's stuff) I still cannot fully master the performance he put on. God bless Buddy Forever

Maybe your perception is too educated into grooves and steady beats. Jazz drumming is based on time manipulation, syncopations and other complex rudimental combinations. Maybe this simply isn't for you. Its just a matter of being into rudiments and musicality, finesse and swing feelings at using them. Dont be stupid!please Its not only the speed that is awesome, is the quality and the presicion he had to played the drums, i bet you couldnt even play the same notes he did in half he´s speed. Buddy not only was the best drummer, he made the drums an essential instrument for all times. If it wasnt for buddy, you wouldnt know th drums as you know them now a day.

I understand. Actually, I have nothing against that. I was always a metalhead myself, very deeply into speed for the sake of itself, but Buddy shoke me like few. Now, Jazz drumming is my new Zenith, my limit and biggest aspiration. My head turned 360 degrees - and I'm glad it did. Lol. This is probably that very specific Buddy Rich effect only him could provide us with. You'll probably frequent his videos more often (and quite probably, for all your life). The way he moved and made those drums sound is unique. No other drummer will ever make you as addicted. Its magic. He had that "something else" you just can't ignore as a drummer. Me playing some rudiments and tricks. Just a short clip with bad quality (sorry for that!). And yeah, I'm really using traditional grip with my right hand instead of my left one (it just feels good to me). There is a good number of mistakes here and there! (sorry for that as well).

There were virtually no limits for what kind of rudimental combinations he could do, because he was NOT a "victim of the bounce", he controlled every little accent variation inside a drum phrasing, at any given speed, for any given "length of time", and thats true, unequalled proficiency, my friend.

Try playing a series of paradidledidles mixed up with flams, 8 stroke rolls and drags at 18 notes per sec... Try doing it just by using the moeller technique - or any multiple rebound method - and you may understand what I'm saying. Thats what "being a victim of rebounce" really is. Buddy Rich was one of the very few drummers ever to fully master both his hands' every motions with the sticks.

Its not funny at all. I never bothered to give you a proper explanation on it before but I might give you one now. Most drummers (99,99% of all) don't have a proper full domain over their sticks' behavior. Its not totally wise when someone applies a moeller wip motion and waits the natural rebound resulted from such action to give him the desired number of strokes. its a limiting situation actually.

No. One thing is technique, the other, it's application. Technique is nothing (or a very empty thing) without proper application, and thats exactly where Buddy would shine like no one else before or after him: Phrasings... Musical phrasings my friend, done using drum rudiments and his own one-of-a-kind once in a lifetime Jazz experience, viewing, witnessing and learning from the very best jazz musicians of all time. Drummers, flute players, singers, pianists, you name it. Buddy knew them all.

Yes, no doubt. I would be crazy if single strokes were my main and only concern. Actually, I'm trying to play dynamically here. My doubles are quite good (imo). You can check the articulation between fingers and wrists to make them more controlled and "tactile" to me. Buddy's secret certainly was not being able to play singles as fast as he could but incorporate musicality to them.

So..You have been practicing single stroke rolls. No wonder you like Buddy so much. There is much more to drumming than playing single stokes as fast as you possibly can. I would take time off from your singles, and work on your doubles. It would also be a good idea to work on other rudiments that will improve you playing dramatically and make it interesting. Just a suggestion. But do what you enjoy that's all that matters.

I envy you (heh). Try practising your doubles, singles, drags, flams and press rolls plus exploring different syncopations/accents in between! Try mixing everything up and try to "feel" it in your hands. In your rebound. You should be able to create something cool with that. You should also get a nice practice pad that could give you a nice feedback for the more "silent" moments, hehe (preferably the ones which "vibrate", generating a somewhat close sound to that of a snare drum. They will help you with your "feeling", hehe). You're using a Pearl marching? Awesome. They usually sound incredible.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, you really have to "feel" it. Right now I'm unable to carry on with my usual drum routine because of a tendinitis (don't how to spell it in English, heh). Well, particularly I use a pair of light sticks (vic firth, in my case) or a pair of a lot heavier ones with some nylon tips to develop my hands'/fingers' muscles.

Hey, I never said I was as good as him. Man, not even close. Mangini is an octopus, excellent limb independence, speed and, he is charismatic as well while playing, for sure. I was just being a "little bitch" on that issue because many people at the audience started to make noises while he executed what - to them - seemed impossible: a very simple "graviti blast" roll. Yes, he does is clean, but you can still hear some sloppyness and mistakes into it's progression - I can hear it.

This is a response to your comment about Mangini. If this is all you got, you need to stop commenting and criticizing. Maybe you're just not used to this pipe snare drum + jazz rudimental mixture but it does make sense in this aimed context. Also don't let the obvious bad sound mislead your judgement. Just forget this "click" sound caused by a constantly shaking camera and concentrate on the (rather weak, I agree) sound of the second (and the strong sounds of the first one) drum pad. I'd say that the majority of this video is composed by a good mix of Buddy Rich influenced (just INFLUENCED, obviously not as good) syncopations and rudimental combos of many kinds which were overall well executed, clean and fast; not fantastic or aything, but solid enough - even some of Buddy's artistic arm movements, rapid drum accents and spontaneous pauses between rudimental segments were applied.

I think it helps to put it into perspective for a better evaluation. You said that "almost EVERYTHING" was VERY SLOPPY, but I also have to disagree with that statement. Not because I'm both the owner and the person being featured in this video (that would be too obvious and way mundane), but simply because this is not a - in MY opinion - truthful statement at all.
