eugh 1080i is a nightmare but he is right about 1080p being your target. However, there are limitations on 1080p such as how if you sit 9 feet from a 45 inch screen (1080p) the resolution limit of the human eye means you will only be able to see the equivalent of 720p. For 1080p you need to sit 1.6 times the screen diameter from the screen, that means bigger screen or sit closer. It's 2.4 times diameter for 720p BTW.

It's an excellent video, he just talk about a deinterlacer because he knows the average American citizen assumes that 1080p is the best due to the fact that TV commercial tell them so. Basically, if the average citizen buys a 1080i instead of 1080p, they probably assume that what there seeing is the best picture, and won't even consider or even know what a deinterlacer is. This is a terrible comment, you need to do some basic research on the American Citizen.

A computer connected to a 1080p LCD can show 1080i perfectly interlaced using VLC Player and the linear deinterlace method. With 1080i50 material as original source, this is much better than 720p25 and almost the same as 720p50. Saying an LCD or plasma cannot display 1080i perfectly, due to technology specifications, is a lie. Problem is most TVs today deinterlace the video in a pretty awful way. But impossible technology wise it is not.

Actually, broadcasting 1080p would use LESS bandwidth than 1080i, if the bitrates were the same. 1080i60 is essentially the same amount of data as 1080p30, while blu-ray movies are 1080p24. The bitrate for movies are somewhere around 40000kbps in h.264, while the bitrate for 1080i is usually around 8000kbps, which the only reason why bluray movies look better than broadcast 1080i. If they raised the bitrate on 1080i and used a proper deinterlacer, it would be better than 1080p24 (bluray).

With a proper deinterlacer, 1080i looks FAR, FAR better than 720p. Why do these people NEVER talk about deinterlacers? Also, there is a HUGE difference between watching 1080i content on a 720p TV, and watching it on a 1080p TV. This is a terrible video. This guy needs to do some basic research.

First of all, where does this guy get his info? And second, 1080i will look better if you have a proper display, not one of these cheap ones which deletes one field. You can cheat the fields thing if you take the the two fields in from the same point, like using 25 or 30 shutter speed on a 1080i camera. 720 is probably better for video games because the frame rate varies. You can broadcast 1080p, it just uses more bandwidth.

What's not "true 24p?" You sougund as uninformed as the guy in this vid. The V1U IS TRUE 24P! The HVX is a great camera. But don't dis the V1 with bogus info just because it's not your camera. The V1 has true 24p... I have one and that was a requirement for my camera. The only negative that this fellow gets right is the variable speed focus. That is definitely not a plust on the V1 and I can't think of a single benefit for having it. Otherwise the V1 is a great camera!

Hmm - perhaps you shouldn't believe all that Sony state. The sensors are interpolated to get 1920x1080 res - it isn't true 1920x1080. Oh, and HDV is 8 bit, so 'lifting' the colour to 10 bit doesn't get you any more information. Try READING some more about video before you climb on YouTube...

Nevermind this is the FIRST SONY PROSUMER camera to shoot 24P at 1080... or the fact that it uses 3 cmos sensors instead of ccds to eliminate vertical smear... or that it records to inexpensive tape rather than P2. Cineform has software that works in conjuction with Adobe Premiere to enable use of footage from this camera - gives you true 1920X1080 res, and a lift from 8 bit color to 10 bit. Try READING some more about the cameras before you climb on YouTube next time.

Hi, your footage looks great. I'm buying the M2 adapter soon, but I'm not quite sure which lens adapter I want to get. I love the look of this footage, which Nikon lenses did you use for this clip? redrock is not very good. you have to manually align the lens inside the unit. doesnt come done for you. with lenses, you really need cinema lenses. if you use stills lenses, you cant rack focus well. if you wanna go all out, get a P+S Teknik adaptor (though expensive). havent used the letus35, but want to soon....

I don't know about other adapter system but if you're buying m2, there are different lens mount that you can choose when you buy your m2: nikon, canon, etc... Most people, me included, choose nikon before of its low cost lens which can be purchases easily off ebay and the nikon mount is the same for every lens.

As a working movie producer you have to convince a person to leave their home & put down 10 bucks minimum for the prospect of being entertained. If you feel you can entertain them only by recording your images with film then by all means raise an extra 30 to 50 grand for your picture. Lumet's Before the Devil Knows your dead was pretty entertaining to me and I'm looking forward to James Cameron's 3D HD movies as well as Soderbergh's two Che movies. A FORMER master, to be specific. Now, he sounds like a has-been who is blindly promoting something he has no technical knowhow regarding, and is addressing it as a concept. Sure HD in a perfect world would run circles around film. But projected, it still looks like "video". Someday this will change, of course. But at the moment, nothing looks like film, cept film. Audiences will get used to the HD look after a while. But...we will be taking a step backwards, aesthetically.

I honestly wish I had never seen this video. I loved this guys work. And now I cannot un-see what I just witnessed, and it's going to bug me, at least a little, each time I watch one of his films. But, as I mentioned, the number of jokes, stories, and firshand experiences from anyone in the industry ultimately point to one sad fact: Most directors are semi-mad, manipulators, with very closed minds. But it's the exceptions to those rules that give me hope.

I like how he makes up his own states of matter...to suit his arguement. For every digi-fool out there, there are three or four very learned and wise DP's that are loathe to skip, jump, and hoppity-hop on the digital bandwagon. The fucking morons commenting below should realize that Sidney Lumet has been making movies since the 1950's. He is a Master Director and you dumb cocksuckers will NEVER accomplish even a 1000th of the work he has done. It's so refreshing to hear Lumet, who's in his 80's, tell the truth about how miserable and archaic using film is.
