I don't know how long the blade of a schiavona is supposed to be but I can tell you this sword is very nearly an exact copy of one of MRL/Windlass's Sciavona swords. seems windlass and COld Steel have some sort of agreement going. I don't know the details but I've been hearing a lot about it since I got this sword.

I would like to point out for those viewers with a little less experience that what Sparkypim says is generally correct in most cases. however, notice that the cuts I use with right leg forward cutting right (and vice versa) are cuts that are either flatly horizontal or slightly rising. this way there is no danger of my cut hitting my leg. the diagonal cut I use has my leg back and out of the way. the key here is to have practiced your forms and to know where your sword will go ahead of time.

I thought I had it on good authority. having never seen the windlass version myself I would be interested if you could point out some of the differences. the pictures I've seen of the windlass sciavona looked exactly like this one, but it's so hard to tell without seeing it first hand. thanks for the info please reply with more.

Actually I landed mine as a freebee for The Delkareth Martial Arts Association as per weapons testing, primarily for a demonstration of comparing SLO's, MP swords (Like Cold Steel, Windlass, Hanwei) and custom handmade swords. Anyhow, it and the Windlass Schiavona are actually quite different, simply modeled on the same variety of weapon, though th hilts may be authentically identical, Cold Steel and Windlass are both famous for stealing other company's designs. I've never handled the Windlass.

well, I wouldn't want to pay the full price from the cold steel web site, but if you get it for half that somewhere like trueswords, then yeah it's worth it. I would like to note that this appears to be the exact same sword as the Windlas Schiavona that is now out of stock. Cold steel is stamped on the tang and all but it is identicle in all ways to the windlass sword. so we have some production houses helping each other out. no biggie just thought I'd mention it.

using my new Kaze from Cheness Cutlery. tried some draw and push cuts and slowed down because I've had a habit of over-powering in the past. as you can see I slowed down a little too much in some cases and stopped my cut inside a target or two.

thanks dime, the Kaze is a good sword but it really depends on what you want. it isn't perfect. Cheness' kissaki are pretty ugly. I polished mine out. all cheness tips are the same but they don't mess up the swords. check out Sword-buyers-guide also we have a great cutting group here on youtube. take a look at United Backyard Cutters (or UBC). I have loads more info I'll message you

on my first review of the video I noticed the same thing. in fact once I even mutter about not following through in the vid. If you watch my other vid you'll see following through is normally not an issue for me ;) as for my pieces, Sam Salvati has them and is supposed to be seeing if he can learn anything about the break from them. he also said he would grind down the short part for tanto fittings and point up the long part if he gets a chance. if he doesn't I will.

what i have learned is that if u keep ur arms extended and only draw ur elbows in when the sword is about to hit the target that will give u a nice slicing action. but thats just me and im a lonley backyard samurai

Hey Ian its Nurow from sbg. the cuts look good for the most part I did notice that on almost all of your pooched cuts the blades stops almost pointing at the camera. I think this is what is causing the problem. Remember always follow through on the cut. Its like a punch. You don't want to hit your target, you want to hit what is behind your target. The target is just in the way :D. Happpy cutting and grats on the new kaze. ps what are you gonna do with the broken pieces?

thank you Gec/Ramm cutting with a live blade is pretty new to me. one of the points of this practice was to see just how slow and weak I could cut and still slice effectively. the answer was surprisingly slow. for anyone who doesn't know this sword is RAZOR sharp almost litterally. I could hit it with the lightest of stones then strop it and be able to shave my face. as it is it will shave hairs off my arm with a light touch.

Hey Ian, this is Ramm from SBG. I left a bit ago but wanted to give you a bit of advice since you asked for it on the forum. I see that you're trying to cut down on the force you put into the swings, but I still think you need to practice with a bit more speed. Also, on your two handed cuts, stepping through the cut with your back leg might get a bit more fluidity in your motion. But DAMN! You're doing very well!

Hey I know that guy. Good cuts my friend I only have one comment. Please Please be careful or even reconsider doing that cut where you rest the blade on your shoulder. I know it works in the situations you have used it before and I respect that but remember the katana is sharpened and it only takes a slight miscalculation for you to end up like Van Gogh. on reviewing the video I think I see what raised your question on my grip: my habbit of sticking out my pinky and ring finger before cuts. As I understand it the grip should be firm with the pinky and ring fingers and loosen towards the index. The flexing of my fingers you saw was me reminding myself to use those fingers more. I've been out of practice for a good while and was trying to keep my mind focused on doing things right. Gauntlets can build bad habbits if one isn't careful by the way.

JFC - I will definitely take your advice and do some more research so I can improve and get it all right. Thank you for the input. on grip: I am trained in western swordsmanship and have a good grip by those standards, though a katana is a differnt kettle of fish. I have had some informal Katana training and will be receiving more in a formal setting soon. It's all about learning and getting better. My form was sloppy that day. New sword, giddy, all that. Not if your edge alignment is correct. I performed a vertical slash technique that cleaves the bottle in 2, no damage. If a novice were to hit the bottle incorrectly, bad things will happen! Very good cutting, lanflaer. Are you gripping it correctly?

Actually MonteCristoll, I am moving with exaggerated slowness here so the camera can actually SEE me. if I were to move at my normal speed you'd never see me move unless you had a laboratory grade high-speed camera, you know, the ones they record bullets hitting apples with. I'm sorry if the result is not worthy of your eyes but this is the only way I can interact with the people here who seriously want to study sword-technique and that would be a lot easier to do without coments like yours.

From the way you sheathed your sword and held the saya (a lot of idiots have it edge down), I'm guessing you've had actual training. If so, I have a question: why is the weapon sheathed edge up? I heard its for a faster draw, but it seems faster to draw out and up, rather than up then down. Is it because there are more vital targets on top of the body, like the head and the sub-clavian arteries?

yeah will do. that was my first time actually cutting anything with that sort of technique. that and I got some stage-fright. I was recently reading an article by a master saying one should clear the habaki by pushing with one's index finger, not the thumb as it can get cut. makes sense, and hey, he's the guy they call master.

Your footwork needs improvement, your first slash for instance, a good draw(Make sure that you clear the habaki from the saya before drawing, like you see in the anime, you open it with your thumb), but you sliced to the right, and you stepped forward with your right foot(When it should have been your left), but all and all, not too bad. Keep practicing my friend.

ever wonder how effective a sword was against armor? the first sword was a blunt for sparring, the second was A sharp Valian Armory Custom Tuned Atrim practical. the sharp sword was not harmed at all, it was even still fully sharp afterwards. I'd say hitting a helmet with a sword wouldn't be very lethal. better hope to stun him long enough to get by the armor.

I was thinking an ATrim sword. Mr. Trim's a pretty nice guy, always willing to answer my questions and stuff. He uses good steel, too. I used to have a Hanwei hand and a half, but it was like swinging a sharp block of steel. My fiance is going to help me look, too. She started out in longsword fencing. We're the types who deffinately research before we buy, and tell people to do the same with Japanese style swords (And reptiles, for that matter.)

Glad to hear you say that. so many katana guys are all up on "the katana is so vastly superior anything else isn't even really a sword" trip that it can be pretty disgusting. my advice on western swords is to do a lot of research to find a really good one if you are going to spend less than 450-800+. anything by Angus Trim (450+ range) is a safe bet as is anything from Albion (800+ range) other than that look for swords that have a lenticular profile (like a double katana back to back) + stiff.

I completely understand your position, I was there once upon a time. I've been in love with swords for as long as I can remember. you keep practicing and you'll learn stuff all by your self. you can also check the UBC group, lots of good swordsmen there. search youtube for UBcutters (or click my channel and go to my groups) also check out sword-buyers-guide(dot)com great info there. by the time you are 18 you'll be good with a sword. keep at it.

ah! well then, I'm not one to criticize. I practice with my un-sharpened sword in my room, but I wouldn't call my self a sharp swordsman. Being thirteen, and not having much experience with swords, since they're so effing hard to get, puts me in a difficult situation to be obsessed with swords. Have fun with your awesome sword!
