Oh, so essentially anything composed before 1735 is absolute crap unless it's played in some warped fashion and not the way it's written. I feel so loved. Everything has it's place, and I like, in general, all of the compositional periods throughout the organ's history. There's nothing inherently wrong with the way Fox or Guillou play; we just don't like it, and since you're going to make this a musical class war why don't you go complain on a video of a more modernized performance.

Ovviamente Koopman conosceva a memoria questo testo già quando era un bimbo ma non si è limitato a questi esempi, ha voluto approfondire per una vita intera, ricercando nelle biblioteche di tutta Europa i manoscritti e gli autografi più impensabili, divenendo così il più grande esperto in materia. Il fulcro della questione è il fatto che è universalmente noto come Koopman sia il Pelé della Musica Barocca ma ora arrivi tu con le tue "originalissime" arcinote scoperte. Quello di cui parli è un manoscritto esemplificativo, redatto da J.S. per suo figlio W.F. Bach per far in modo che si perfezionasse nell'arte della tastiera. E' un testo stranoto, vetusto, che persino i bambini delle elementari conoscono e tu lo presenti come una novità assoluta. Ti ripeto, Koopman è il Pelé del Barocco.

Koopman incarna la perfetta esecuzione degli insegnamenti dettati da J.S. Bach a suo figlio Wilhelm Friedemann, arricchendola ed integrandola con ciò che prescrive Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach nel suo libro (e con le maggiori scuole interpretative di epoca Barocca). Purtroppo per un "fuoriclasse" come te, è difficile accettare di essere un principiante a paragone del virtusoismo Barocco di Koopman (e su organi autenticamente storici, non spazzatura moderna con meccanica in lega leggera).

Evidentemente né tu, né Koopman siete a conoscenza che il signor Sebastian ci ha lasciato un manoscritto in cui illustra di suo pugno la corretta esecuzione di trilli, mordenti, ecc. You are probably right by claiming "give to the Italians what is of them" -- but I am sure you know that the members of Giardino Armonico are often called the "wildest children" of an Austrian musician, Nicolaus Harnoncourt. Gli studi più recenti dimostrano chiaramente come J.S. Bach non fosse affatto un santo ma un uomo come tutti gli altri, con i propri vizi e debolezze (attacchi d'ira, temperamento orgoglioso e caparbio, conti esorbitanti in locande dove spendeva più per la birra che per i cembali, etc.). L'immagine idealizzata di stampo ottocentesco è stata inconfutabilmente smentita. Ciò non toglie che Bach fosse un gran filosofo e teoreta ed ovviamente, il più grande genio della Storia della Musica.

Ho un mio concetto di Bach: una persona che in tutta la sua vita non si è mai concesso un colpo di testa se non sparire qualche giorno per sentire un concerto d'organo. Una formazione religiosa rigida e 200 anni di storia per poter capire la sua musica. Lo stile è barocco, ma è solo una forma per comunicare un mondo interiore e una sensibilità da vero genio. Il mio unico rammarico è che non ci fossero, all'epoca, i registratori. Io a sentire Bach ... piango!

Bach was not at all an ideal or perfect Lutheran or a saint. When he was a kid and a young man with his wild and bold performances at the organ, he used to shake, shock and offend the closed mind Lutheran audience. Probably when he was old he was more calm but his later works, like the Goldberg Variations, are very ornamented. Then also lots of Bach pupils were Lutheran but many of them used to add tons of elaborations and ornamentations to the scores of JS Bach.

I don't agree. Koopman always said that he doesn't want or wish to play like JS Bach: he plays like a great Baroque organist and cembalist, contemporary of JS Bach. Koopman's style of playing is authentic Baroque, this is absolutely sure. Only silly organists are so foolishly pretentious to think to play "like JS Bach". Koopman, on the other hand, is a great Baroque organist and cembalist that, like a pupil of JS Bach, inetrpreters the work of his master. This is real Baroque style.

I am not certain about that. While it's true that in Baroque times ornamentation was mostly up to the performer, don't forget that Bach was a protestant; and while I admire Koopman and love his ornaments - I am not certain that Bach's theology would let him be so elaborate. But the way Bach played doesn't matter; it's about what we do with him today. Yes, there are Gouldists and Hewittists; and there are Schweitzerists and Leonhardtists. I'm merely a Koopmanist, disregarding authenticity. :-)

Except for a couple of nice but unknown organists, Germany has the worst and most dull organists of the world. Never heard "pesky noises from the mechanics" from Koopman, maybe you are him confusing with someone else... Instead I heard many noises from many others organists that are less talented and play much slower than him... Anyway if an organ is in poor conditions it is obvious that it is noisy (and a Baroque mechanic organ will be always a bit noisy in its entire mechanic). Most of the wrong echos are due to change of the original position of the organ.

As I've said van Beek and Zerer are good but cannot even be compared to Koopman. Is like comparing JS Bach with his pupil Kirnberger. Your list of organists that "are better than Ton" is clearly a list of "politically correct" organists that prefer to take a "safe moderate non-Baroque place" to avoid to accept the risk of playing in a true Baroque, excessive, extreme way. Anyway I repeat, Zerer and van Beek are nice pupils that try to absorb Ton's talent: one day, maybe, they'll grow up.

Anche le sue esecuzioni dei Concerti per Organo di Haendel sono splendide e adesso il suo progetto dell'omnia di Buxtehude sta semplicemente riscrivendo lo Stylus Phantasticus (o meglio, lo sta resuscitando). E' un artista raro, con un controllo impressionante su tutto quello che è prassi storica: dall'attenzione maniacale per la retorica all'ornamentazione mai ripetitiva, che tocca tutte le scuole trattatistiche. Inoltre ha un gusto personale (che in fondo è la parte fondamentale di un buon musicista) che sembra davvero nato tre secoli fa... E' troppo inserito nell'ottica barocca!

Puoi reperire tutto ad eccezione dell'omnia per organo su Teldec da 16 cd, ora fuori catalogo ma che presto verrà ristampata su Antoine Marchand records, l'etichetta personale di Koopman (visita il suo sito per maggiori informazioni). A chi piace il vero stile Barocco (non edulcorato), non può che ammirare Koopman...

Bach was a wonderful master in tuning the cembalos but to tune the pipes of an organ is something quite different and it is something that you do not very often and not as often as with others instruments. Probably Bach used to know also how to do it with his hands but about organs he was an expert more on the technical-theoretical level about temperaments and pitch than someone that used to tune with his hands.

Comunque una corona è esattamente quello che fa Koopman (tanto per darti un aiutino). Anche se tu analizzassi il manoscritto "Toccata con Fuga pedaliter in d-moll" ovviamente non avresti gli strumenti e la conoscenza per poter interpretare gli abbellimenti di epoca Barocca.

Nel manoscritto di JS Bach non saprei poiché esso non esiste (forse lo conosci tu nella tua fervida immaginazione). In quello di J. Ringck, ovverosia nell'originale archetipo arrivato a noi, non c'è né un trillo, né un mordente, bensì una Corona, anche se dubito che tu conosca il significato di tale abbellimento (per ulteriori approfondimenti in merito alla Decoratio Barocca, dai un'occhiata al libro di C.P.E. Bach).

Mi dispiace per te, dalle tue parole è evidente che non sei a conoscenza dello stile Barocco, della sua prassi interpretativa, del manoscritto originale di questa Toccata con Fuga, etc... Se conoscessi queste cose capiresti che ad averlo suonato male sono state intere generazioni che lo hanno eseguito in maniera moderna e volgare amata dal pubblico di massa, alterandone il vero contenuto. Questa è un'interpretazione Barocca, splendida nello stile e virtuosismo e filologicamente ineccepibile.

I disagree about the fugue, smithsherman. While I love the rich, ornamentative Toccata, and recognize that Ton certainly takes his time to enjoy each and every note he plays, I think the Fugue is a very beautiful contrast to the Toccata. Where the Toccata is practically tempo-less, the Fugue is perfectly in tempo, regimented, and almost marchlike. I would even go so far as to argue that a Fugue is meant to be regimented and predictable as far as entrances and relationships go.

This older version is played much slower than the newer one so it is obvious that this one sounds more detailed and with richer nuances.. but it is only an illusion, if you slow down the newer one, it is better than this one. The newer one has also more decoratio, more charisma and better phrasing and articulation.

This Toccata performance is richer and more inspired in detail than the new one.The opening ornaments are incredibly sensuous.The Many accelerandi and rallentandi make this this very interesting in the Toccata.The fugue is still misssing elements that I see possible in my intuition,and resultantly is less interesting.Many of the soprano and alto events occur too predictably and regimentedly with relationship the the other parts.The new Fugue is a little better in that regard.
