Ok prooc. I may be wrong about why electoral voting was invented. But I could have sworn I've read several times that the founding fathers did not want a straight democracy where 51% of the mob could vote the other 49% to death camps (for example) just because the 51% had the majority vote.

You're not getting it. If it went by popular vote the less populated states would have even less of a vote. The electoral college was designed to give smaller states more of a say by giving them proportionately more votes then they'd have if you just went by the popular vote.

I think the reason why electoral votes were invented is because it give 'informed' and 'educated' voters more power. (Those who survive the hideous caucus circus to become delegates.) Most state's citizens have the same beliefs, but sometimes not everyone can make it to the polls. The electoral college accounts for this. This is the balancing of power I was speaking about earlier. A popular vote does not necessarily reflect the true view of the country because of people who don't vote, but if they would have would've voted against the popular vote.

Ok let's work with small numbers for simplicity. Say one state has 25 registered liberal voting citizens and 30 registerd conservative voting citizens and a total of 120 citizens. 20 liberals and 19 conservatives vote respective to their political views. The state's electoral votes would be for the Democrat. These small numbers would not effect the election that much if popular vote is used, but since every electoral vote is important the state has fair say.

I think it is safe to say that something like that would be an expensive & seemingly never ending pain in the ass, just like the last time it happened, in Florida in 2000!! If the electoral college is not seated by Senators or Representatives, Then who are these state appointed people? Are they Lawyers, Judges, Business Men & Women? Does anyone know? Can I be on the electoral college? The troubling part is that these people are NOT REQUIRED to vote as the majority in their state did. Unless you trust these APPOINTED people who you do not vote for and don't know, your vote for the president doesn't count for shit.

Its more inhumane to allow an minor to scar herself emotionally for the rest of her life just so she can end her pregnancy without her parents finding out. Minors are too young to make these kinds of decisions. I'm a minor and I respect that. If they got raped, than they can put the child up for adoption, yes pregnancies are long and painful, but not as painful as a lifetime of living with past mistakes.

4 did not pass, I think people were concentrating on 8 too much. However I feel that Prop 8 was more important because Prop 4 didn't prevent abortion it only required parents to be notified. Still disappointed it didn't pass though.

Actually it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a waiting period for all abortions because most women who have one later regret their decision and it scars them for life. Besides, what's 48 hours of a "inconvenient" pregnacy when weighed against a child's life? This wouldn't take away anyone's rights. It would simply give them time to think about what they're about to do.

If all this prop does is notify parents then I'm voting yes. Parents have the right to know. I personally wouldn't allow my daughter to have an abortion except in the case of rape. If she thinks she's grown up enough to have sex then she'd damn well better be grown up enough to take responsibility for her own actions. Yes I'd make her raise it too. I'm reposting because I would really like an answer on the freedom to organize act for unions. Republicans and corporate interests say the act "takes away the private ballot." Democrates say it makes it easier to form a union. No one has explained what "taking away the private ballot" means. Even former Senator George McGovern is on TV deploring taking away the secret ballot in support of the Republican position. Why would Democrats write a bill that "takes away the private ballot?"

Thanks for the response. I was however, wondering more as to why we don't create a Nat'l system(SS# or otherwise - I only used social security as an example because people are familiar with it &we file taxes w/IRS w/current address,age,etc)that AUTOMATICALLY gives us the right to vote if eligible rather than the type of current voter-reg where the voter themselves HAS TO apply for&seek out which creates voter suppression. There has to be a better way-Look at voting in Canada & other Democracies
