Eddie also confessed those aspirations to Luciano Pavarotti when they filmed "Yes, Giorgio" together, with the result that, at age 76, the former B'way hoofer made his operatic debut as Emperor Altoum in a six-performance run of "Turandot" during the San Francisco Opera's 1982 summer season. I've seen two reviews that briefly mention Eddie: the positive one found his relatively small voice suitable for the character of the frail old ruler, while the negative one claimed it just didn't carry.

oldmoviegirl, that was absolutely delightful. I recall an interview on Canadian television that Eddie did and he spoke of an early ambition for opera that was not meant to be. I love listening to him sing. The insights on the careers of the charming couple is much appreciated.

I wonder what would've needed to change for Eddie Albert to have caught on as a singer. Better advice on material? A label that knew how to sell him? Exposure with a big band in the 40s, while still a H'wood leading man? He certainly had the talent. Of course, I'm obviously sharing only what I consider to be his better recorded performances; there *were* some less interesting ones (though he only struck out completely a few times, IMO, and all on that 1966 album-- e.g. "Blowin' in the Wind").

Wow, those were 3 good songs. The more I hear, the more I'm convinced, he really was a very good singer. She was good, too, but more in the background here. And you did a great job with the editing and putting in the information. Neat, that they travelled together with an act. What an interesting life he had.

I've heard it-- and read all the spirited commentary from people who were upset to find out that the song turned out not to be original to MBD (and then the *other* commentary, from the people who were upset at the first group for making a big deal about it). The song certainly has gotten around!

Is it Eddie's version you recall? I had no idea till I started researching it, but this song was covered by everyone and his brother (well, father). Danny Kaye & daughter recorded it, Frankie Lane & Jimmie Boyd did a version (which uses different English words-- maybe a straight translation of the French?), and sources say more. Some attribute it to Cab Calloway, but I can't verify that. And then there's the Jewish version, which seems to date from the 80s-90s. Know anything else about the song?

I'll admit that I was slow to warm up to this one. The high saccharine content, plus the fact that (I think) Sondra Lee wasn't an actual child, but an adult singing like one, make it-- for me, at least-- less of an easy listen than the B-side, "Jenny Kissed Me." But I heard it enough while making the slideshow that it started to grow on me. :-)

Great song. Lost gem. This song deserves to have someone redo it. Maybe in a family movie or something so it can be more widely heard in the USA. Of course, it would be hard to improve on Eddie's voice.
