They are playing Malletkats which are basically keyboard controllers. We use samples to replicate the brass and string sections. A couple of the marimba players have headphones to help sync with the click track that the synth players hear as well.

Cliff Colnot often guest conducts orchestras at Indiana University, and this semester he worked with the orchestra I am in. He is a fantastic musician, teacher, and leader, and he has an incredible ear, so I'm not surprised that he did an arrangement of this caliber. And these students are so talented! Congratulations!

this is awesome (note "is"). im actually in the drumline, but if our pit had the same amount of people with equal skill as you guys, not only would we have a large front ensemble, but it would translate into a very large group of marchers, which is something we need

This is why at 4 i started percussion. Guys that was fabulous. I have performed as a percussion for 28 years and that was the first time i heard shostakovich through percussion prospective. You guys are going to be great percussionist in the future. I really look forword to seeing you in the professional world. I do hope you keep mastering your skills and master achiving perfect pitch. Music is simply the best thing on this earth, and you capture everything about it that makes it amazing. Percussion is often taken for granted, but percussion ensembles, such as your selves, are keeping the percussion movement alive. Congrats on an amazing video. I would gladly play with or take lessons from any one of you :)

We use two Malletkats split between two players, Cubase SX3, Gigastudio orchestra 3.21, and Vienna Symphony Library. The four synth players are listening to a click track and the accoustic players follow the lead of the synth players to compensate for the latency of playing samples live. PS I agree with you on all the peripheral benefits of music education. We have enough doctors who are skilled musicians to fill a full size orchestra here. But I would also like to see us go back to seeing the arts as having intrinsic value to human beings. We are beginning to fund the arts again somewhat more here in my state, but the buzz is that it is only to make sure we produce better mathmeticians and scientists. Art itself is of great value and it is time for politicians to see that.
