What a great song! I looked up REK because I like country artists who write real country and was very pleased to find this song. The guitarist couldn't be Mottola, he was born in 1949, according to Wikipedia...so either Kessel or Roberts. Most likely Roberts as he has played on lots of other TV themes. Now...folks, what about that trumpet???

I have looked and looked and can't find a definitive answer on who played guitar. Mottola is a good guess, but considering the time and the fact that it's Riddle's orchestra, it's probably either Howard Roberts or Barney Kessel. I'd vote for HR because he was known for endings like this one.

Hi isleyrundgren,,good call, The theme is available on disc, N.R. TV themes. I was about 5 as well, my dad would try to explain what was happening but I just loved that 'Vette!! Yes, it would be a good one to dance to,,,just wish is was longer..but who are the musicians playing the solos...this is driving me nuts...This tune just sends me AWAY!!!

When this series started airing in England, I was only about 5 years old, too young to fully understand the storylines, but i made sure i was sat in front of the telly, just to see the beginning where Marty and George are driving that cool convertible in time to the theme music. As i tried to state earlier(but incompletely), that piano hook just wont quit. Is this theme available, i need to get a copy--pronto. If any of you readers are swing dancers, this is a great song to cut a rug to. Awesome

The intro is a standard bass line riff established by Luther Perkins as a member of the Johnny Cash Tennessee Two. It has been copied by many.

Perhaps you don't realize the impact Luther Perkins had. As an original member of Johnny Cash's "Tennessee Two", Luther's plunking intros, bass lines [and breaks] on the lower strings helped establish the Johnny Cash "sound". BTW: Early Country/Western music was based on the three chord progression. It was pure and clean in those days.

Back in the ancient days when this song came out on the radio, the DJ's would talk about how this song was NOT a tribute to Nashville because of the last line of the song, "And I sure am glad I had the chance to say a word about the music and the mothers in Nashville" was said to not be about the musician's mama's. The whole song does seem to be tongue-in-cheek. IMHO, I do think they were praising Sun Records though. Love the song. Love the Lovin' Spoonful! Listen to Do You Believe in Magic!
